Treatment of Root Resorptions in Scottsdale

You probably won’t notice any symptoms. In fact, until your Endodontist in Scottsdale tells you you have it, you probably won’t realize it is happening. It’s root resorption and is highly treatable depending on its presentation when caught in its earliest stages. Dr. Ryan Duval is here to help Cave Creek, Carefree, and all of Maricopa County with precision dentistry on a microscopic level.

What is Resorption?

According to an article in the Journal of the ADA, resorption is “the taking up of products that originate in the body.” In other words, it’s your body absorbing its own materials. It may be a natural process in kids, allowing baby-tooth roots to be replaced by permanent ones, but when it occurs in adults it can have negative effects on your oral health.

Why do Some Teeth or Roots Resorb?

There is some mystery as to the causes of root resorption. Trauma, pressure, or ligament damage, combined with inflammation, are thought to be common causes.

  • The damage is difficult to detect, because it usually happens inside the tooth or below the gum line. It then works its way outward causing :
  • Dark spots
  • Cavity-like eruptions
  • Deep holes or chips
  • Detectable changes noted on routine or specialized dental x-rays

It is imperative to treat root resorption as soon as possible after discovery.

How Do You Treat Root Resorptions?

While it isn’t always possible to save a tooth once resorption has begun, your Endodontist in Scottsdale, Dr. Ryan Duval, is highly-trained to treat your symptoms and get you pain-free as quickly as possible. We have had great success using root canals or in combination with apical surgery (apicoectomies), but complete treatment will be determined following a thorough examination of the affected tooth and advanced imaging like a CBCT scan (cone beam computed tomography). These scans reveal even the tiniest structures inside the tissues in three dimensions, which allows us accurate treatment planning and precise results.
